Health Benefits/ Child Obesity

Childhood Obesity continues to increase because physical activity continues to decrease.

  • The requirement of 60 minutes of physical activity per day for children ages 6 to 19 is only met by one third of that population (Hassler, 2012).

Our basketball program is designed to engage children in over an hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity a day, 2 to 4 days a week, depending on the child’s involvement. Reasons children are not getting the physical activity they need is because they do not have access to:

  •  Facilities
  •  Equipment
  •  Safe Areas where they can play and be physically active.

They also need to be surrounded with an environment that promotes physical activity. By starting up a low fee basketball program we are providing a way to engage the community and increase physical activity amongst children. Overweight and obese children suffer serious health risks by maintaining a sedentary lifestyle. A few of these health risks include:

  •  Type II diabetes
  •  High Blood Pressure
  •  Sleep Apnea
  • Breathing Problems
  • Joint and Bone Problems (Hassler, 2012)

Our basketball program will promote a healthy lifestyle and engage children in physical activity, hopefully decreasing their risk of disease.
